Road resurfacing

Our days of struggling with a very rough access road are over. Two contractors have been tasked with resurfacing the entire 35km from Centane to Wavecrest. The entire old road has been prepared for a new surface, and is super smooth at present. The contractors are doing a great job ensuring that traffic is not interrupted while they add a new layer to the road.

Tiyo Soga's Day

On 9th September 2011, 140 years after his death, Tiyo Soga finally had a monument unveiled in his honour.

Born in 1829 at Tyhume village near Alice, Soga made his mark on South African history with the distinction of being the first ordained African priest in 1857. He also earned his Theology Degree in Scotland. In addition to his missionary activities, Tiyo Soga was a writer and translator of English works of literature. He also contributed to the translation of the English Bible into isiXhosa.

In 1857, he married Janet Burnside, a Scottish woman, and they moved to Thutura village, between Centane and Butterworth. Intensely patriotic, he advocated a sense of pride in one's identity, cultural roots and heritage. He also championed the importance of education as a sure path towards the ongoing development of his people. He died on 12th August 1871.

The overgrown, neglected location of Soga's grave prompted Gloria Serobe (Wavecrest's owner) together with corporate colleagues at WIPHOLD, NEDBANK and OLD MUTUAL to refurbish the grave and erect a monument in his memory.

Enjoy a historical break and get the full story at the monument on your journey down to Wavecrest , and look out for the signs on the Butterworth - Centane road, the monument being a short distance off the main road.

EAA fly-in for lunch

The National EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association) Convention was hosted by Wings Park near East London from 6-9 Aug 2011.

Monday the 8th Aug saw 14 aircraft fly in along the coast to Wavecrest for a scrumptious lunch on our deck overlooking the beach. Much fun was had and visitors from all over the country enjoyed the day tremendously, with some groups changing their plans and opting to spend the night with us before flying home the next day. It was great to meet old friends again and introduce new ones to our beautiful view!

Imana Wild Ride 2011

(13 August 2011)

Imana Wild Ride is SA's original mountain biking stage race, where competitors cycle the amazingly beautiful and unspoilt Wild Coast over 4 days. The race gets exciting and widespread media coverage, and highlights this amazing coastline and its tourism opportunities. Be sure to watch out on Supersport for the race footage.

Our morning starts off with preparation of a drinks and snacks table while we eagerly await the first cyclists. The helicopter and camera crew landing on the beach in front of the hotel signals that the race leaders are close. The first cyclists race through the river, hop onto their bikes, and are gone in seconds, As the race progresses, many participants stop and have a chat at the drinks table (some have become regular hotel guests). The more sedate back-of-the-pack cyclists usually enjoy a cup of coffee and scones on our deck, and this year was no exception. After much laughter and comraderie, the group heads off for their overnight spot, a sedate ride along a pristine beach.

We look forward to seeing you all next year for Imana Wild Ride 2012

RENOVATIONS & REFURBISHMENTS

The last 6 months of 2010 saw us renovating the central lounge area.

The rather tired old lounge was given a fresh new look. The walls were replastered, and the new paint finish looks great. The old arches were removed to open up the space, and new carpets laid.

The old cane furniture has been replaced with plush and very comfy Bakos Bros sofa's and chairs. The entire lounge area has been refurbished, including nice leather couches for the DSTV lounge and kiddies TV room.

The dining room is looking a lot brighter with brand new tiles, and the introduction of imported cutlery and table linen greatly enhances your culinary experience.

SAAF Helicopter Night Flying Camp

Wavecrest was chosen as the venue for this years South African Airforce Helicopter Night Flying & Navigation Training camp held from the 19 - 22 Oct 2010. All excitement started with Airforce Base Durban being first to arrive, with the Augusta109 putting on an impressive high speed fly-past before landing. A huge Oryx landed an hour later . Three BK117's from Port Elizabeth arrived after lunch.

During the days we were treated to wonderful acrobatic spectacles as the BK117's spent time practising for the upcoming PE Airshow. Darkness brought on a very busy airfield with all the helicopters in the air practising night landings and navigation, essential for night rescue operations.

It was a real privilege for us to host such a dedicated, professional and hardworking group, and we all had great fun.
